Dracula Was Human Tsutomu Miyazaki The Human Dracula Who knew Dracula was actually in Tokyo in the late 80s, killing little girls and eating their hands? Tsutomu Miyazaki, also known as the Otaku Killer or the ‘Human Dracula,’ murdered 4 young girls in 1988, and preserved their body parts as trophies. As these acts are nothings short of horrifying it’s not the only things he did to the corpses of his victims. Tsutomu is seen as a monster for the vicious acts he committed years ago and the extent he took his killings. What made Tsutomu do these horrifying acts can be blamed on the fact that he says, â€Å"nobody would listen to me.† Tsutomu Miyazaki was born on August 21, 1962 and as premature baby which left him with a deformity of the hands. His hands were permanently contorted and fused to the wrists, which meant that he had to move his entire forearm in order to move his hand. Due to his deformity, Tsutomu remained mostly isolated from people for most of his life. He found comfort in his family for a while which made him move back into his parent’s house in the mid-1980s. He took refuge in his grandfather but in May of 1988, his grandfather passed away and Tsutomu took the death very hard, putting him in a severe depression. He was rejected by his two younger sisters and when his older sister caught him watching her in the shower, she told him to leave and he attacked her. When his mother found out about the incident, she told him to focus more on work and he attacked her also. Tsutomu’s parents only wanted him to work at their newspaper business but he wanted to become a teacher, this conflict made him feel like they would not listen to him and all he wanted was someone to hear his problems. â€Å"I felt alone†¦whenever I saw a little girl playing on her own, it was almost like seeing myself (Murderpedia).† Its almost as if Miyazaki murdered the girls not only to get back at the ones who rejected him, but to get back at himself for being so lonely. Miyazaki murdered four little girls in Tokyo, Japan, all under the age of seven and in gruesome ways. His primary method of slaying was strangulation but what he did with the bodies after was the most horrifying part. On August 22, 1988 Miyazaki took his first victim, Mari Konno who was four years old. He took her to a park, took pictures of her, strangled her and took her clothes leaving her naked body behind. He also photographed her clothing and sent the pictures to her family (Ramsland). Miyazaki got away with his first murder and then planned his next victim by October. Masami Yoshizawa was his second victim, a seven-year-old who was walking by herself. Miyazaki persuaded his victim into his car and took her to the spot where he murdered his first victim. He strangled Masami, sexually assaulted the corpse and took her clothes with him. On December 12, 1988, Miyazaki abducted another four-year-old girl named Erika Namba. who he persuaded into his car and took pictures of her like he did the other two victims. He took her clothes with him and was nearly caught. He kept a low profile for the following couple months before taking another victim. Ayako Nomoto was Miyazakis last victim, who he kidnapped on June 6, 1988. Ayako was five years old and was lured away from a park after Miyazaki had been photographing and watching her. Her body was taken back to his house where he would videotape, consume the hand of the corpse, and drink the blood of his victim. He dumped the remains in a cemetery that would later be recovered. In June of 1989, Miyazaki made a mistake that ultimately cost him the illusion of being unknown. He approached two sisters and persuaded one to come with him while the other ran home to get help. The girl’s father stopped Miyazaki in the middle of taking the young girls picture, who he hadn’t got the chance to murder yet. Miyazaki was caught by police while trying to flee to his car, only then did he confess to the murders of the four other girls. When arrested it was found that Miyazaki had 5763 videotapes, many tracing back to be movies he used as outlines for his killings. His collections included the â€Å"Guinea Pig Films† which are said to be his main focus for murder. Miyazaki’s deformity made him isolated, but the neglect from his family sent him into an even worse depression, and his grandfather’s passing only pushed him over the edge. After being arrested and before being put to trial, Miyazaki underwent a psychiatric evaluation. This showed that he suffered from extreme Schizophrenia and had multiple personality disorder. It was proven that he was aware of the severity of his crimes and ultimately was responsible for what he had committed. After Miyazaki was convicted for the murders of the four young girls, his father said in an interview that he regretted not paying more attention to the feelings of his son. After this Miyazaki wrote a furious letter to his father ultimately blaming him for everything. His father committed suicide after the letter and his son being put in jail. Miyazaki was a monster and was feared by many people for his horrific acts of murder, mutilation, vampirism, and preservation of body parts. As Cohen states in Thesis 4: The Monster Dwells at the Gates of Difference, â€Å"the monster is an incorporation of the Outside, the Beyond. What Miyazaki committed was something from the beyond, something that is so horrible, it crossed the line. Killing young girls what monstrous enough, but to drink the blood and eat the hand of his victim? And send the remains of the bodies and pictures to the families was just down right sadistic. Miyazaki was sentenced to death in 1997 and was executed by hanging on June 17, 2008(Wikipedia). Although Miyazaki got justice by being hung, the families of his victims will forever be haunted by what this monster did to their children. Sending remains and pictures of their dead daughters is something only a sick and twisted monster would do. Miyazaki crossed very many lines with the crimes he committed, and be cause he was rejected over and over again by the only people he had close to him, he went on a killing spree to get back at the ones who never gave him a chance. All he wanted was for someone to listen to his problems. As there are many monsters in our society real or fake, the Human Dracula is one no longer among us, the original anyway. We have seen copycat killers of many serial killers before, who’s to say someone wont copy Miyazaki in the future? It will never be clear as to why Miyazaki drank the blood of his victim, but it’s said that he ate one victims hand out of anger for his own. Unfortunately, serial killers and serial rapists will most likely never cease to exist, the ones to come can copy what Miyazaki has done, for the monster always escapes (Cohen). People start to realize that nature cannot provide more resources that it has, and that the natural resources consumed a lot. Therefore, there should be found a way how to solve this particular problem energy crisis. Consequently, we should answer the question if the widespread of renewable energy is as serious alternative to the use of fossil fuels or not. There is no correct answer to this question, but if we definitely want to say ‘yes or ‘no, it will be better to weighting up the pro at contra. So let us find out the causes why renewable energy is a serious alternative to the fossil fuels. First of all, fossil fuels are non-renewable. Natural gas, coal and oil are the most common example of fossil fuels, and they are the three main types of fuel that people mostly use and depend on. Seitz (2008) states that ‘according to many analysts the world would not run out of oil, but in a few decades shortages will become prevalent. According to the Energy Information Agency, approximately 93% of the worlds energy sources are fossil fuels, and renewable energy is just about 7%. (2, 2008) Also burning fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide, which is the greenhouse gas that leads to global warming and seriously damages our planet. Secondly, renewable energy sources, such as hydropower energy, solar energy and wind energy are renewable, efficient and non-polluting or causing little pollution. Lastly, expanding the use of renewable energy will have a positive impact on employment, according to more than a dozen independent studies analyzing the impact of clean energy on the economy. Greater reliance on renewable energy would have large, positive impacts on economy, creating significant numbers of new jobs, driving major capital investment, stabilizing energy prices, and reducing consumer costs. The main potential that this type of energy has is that it can be used in multipurpose area. For example, benefits of hydropower are flooding control, irrigation and public water supplies. (6) Hydropower energy is usually generated form falling water, causing little pollution and it is a type of clean energy. Hydropower resources are usually divided into two main categories. It is also important to weight the facts about advantages and disadvantages of hydropower energy. On the one hand, hydropower is a clean energy source. It does not pollute the air like fossil fuels do. (6) Hydropower plays a major role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The maintain cost is relatively low. It is renewable. The technology is reliable and proven over time. (7). On the other hand, if water is not available, the hydropower plants will not produce electricity. Now let us move on to the disadvantages of solar energy. The main and most important disadvantage is initial cost. Lastly, solar cells are totally depends on weather, and can be used just during daytime and sun hours. It is because the only time when cells can generate electricity. (9) The last and possibly most interesting type of renewable energy is wind energy. There is an interesting point about wind energy. Wind is a form of solar energy; it is ‘caused by the heating of the atmosphere by the sun, the rotation of the earth, and the earths surface irregularities (11). Seitz (2008, 141) reports that wind as an energy source was generally used for power as well as for the cooling houses, adding that wind energy source started to gain respect all around the world. In recent years the widespread of wind energy has been extremely rapid, but, for example, ‘despite that rapid growth, wind energy amounted to less than 1% of U.S. electricity generation (10, p.15). But as any other type of energy wind energy also has advantages and disadvantages. According to the Committee on Environmental Impacts one of the advantages is that ‘wind energy has the potential to reduce environmental impacts, because it does not result in the generation of atmospheric contaminants or thermal pollution (10, p.15). Another good point about wind energy is that it is ‘one of lowest-priced renewable energy available today (11). In conclusion there is a very serious question if the widespread of renewable energy is as serious alternative to the use of fossil fuels or not. Three main types of renewable energy were considered. So there is a chance in the nearest future that renewable energy sources will fully displace fossil fuels. It may happen, but not very soon and probably just when there is nothing to extract or mine. Now both renewable and non-renewable energy will be used simultaneously. People are not ready yet to abandon fossil fuels, and are not ready for spending huge amount of money for renewable energy. Challenges for Building Stable Democracies It has been stated that the Bush administration’s goal is to have America spread democracy around the world. This may sound radical, but it is really just what our foreign policy has been for the past 60 or so years. The only difference is that now there is no evil communist empire, the USSR has fallen. America has a new ideological enemy the theocracies and oppressive regimes around the world especially Africa and the Middle East, the places that breed terrorists. The Bush administration and most people feel that the best way to stop Terrorism is to wipe out its source. However, in building democracies in the Middle East and other parts in the world there are some extreme difficulties in the process. The first step to building any strong democracy in a country with an autocratic regime is to topple that old regime. This can often be very difficult, because these autocratic regimes usually have quite a strong military and police force to oppose your attempted regime change. America really has little problems with this, because our army is the most powerful in the world. Despite our ease at defeating most armies it we cannot overlook this step in the process of building democracies. The next step is occupying the country; this can often take even more troops then the invasion. This is because often after a state is defeated there are still rebel guerilla groups that can cause a bit of a problem. There is also the fact that it takes a long time to rebuild a country. The two countries we have successfully rebuilt as democracies, Japan and Germany, had no guerillas and it took us five years of occupation to get them where they needed to be. Any invasion force has to have ... ...aucratic gridlock that results in extreme inefficiency. Despite these challenges the United States and others have a good chance to spread Democracy, but it will not be easy. Since the beginning of time, the built environment has been an integral part in providing shelter needs for men, women and children. Maslow (1943) formulated that shelter is a basic requirement of humans. In the future, humans will have to construct sustainable shelter otherwise would they would risk depleting resources for subsequent generations. Construction is an example of a multitasking activity. The lifecycle of construction can be broken into phases. Achieving building sustainability in modern environment requires a better understanding of environmental impacts. Impacts such as climate change, associated costs, as well as utilising benchmarking scale to measure across a whole range of building types and occupancies. This report will discuss building sustainability, the constraints that stake holders of built environment face, and the role of architects in the process of constructing sustainable buildings. Conceptually, sustainability is allowing present generation to meet its needs without depriving later generations of a way to meet theirs. According to Meckler (2004), building sustainability means to â€Å"provide a safe, healthy, comfortable indoor environment while simultaneously limit the reduction of the earth’s natural resources†. Architects, with their unique position within the built environment, are well equipped to meet the challenges of sustainability in the built environment. The building and construction industry possesses a high ability to be innovative (Meckler 2004), and through this innovation that it would create new methods and processes resulting in constructing improved sustainable buildings that can be serve as subsequent year’s benchmark to beat. The construction industry has invested in research and development into sustainability in order to gain a clearer understanding the effect of building on the environment and reducing the impact of buildings on the environment. The common goal is to be â€Å"energy efficient†. Being energy efficient does not equate to being energy sustainable. The energy from the traditional fossil sources cannot be supplied without using further considerable amount of energy in supplying it. The efficiency of the energy lifecycle starting from the raw extraction of resources, preparation, transport, conversion and distribution to application may be up to 20%. To equate this in simple terms is that it takes approximately 5kWh to deliver 1kWh of energy for consumption. So in order to consume 1kWh of energy, the real term consumption is actually 6kWh. Numerous studies internationally have shown that operational energy consumes the main amount of total energy use in buildings during a typical service lifespan of approximately 50 years. This accounts for about 85–95% of total energy use (Thormark, 2005). From a residential perspective, there should be a focus more on the sustainable development of the residential buildings and urban constructions. The fundamental reason new and more energy-efficient technologies continue to be ignored and the technologies that are applied rarely perform as efficiently as they should is because of a lack of accountability for building energy performance in current building design and operation practices. The building and construction industry in Australia has made significant progress forward in the last 5 years to improve their environmental performance. This improvement has been in response to increased attention from local and state government policies regarding to Ecological Sustainable Development (ESD), as well as the availability of holistic environmental rating tools such as the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star rating tools. Architects factor in climatic variables into their thoughts as they design and plan houses, premises and buildings (Alnaser & Flanagan 2007). In hot dry regions such as in the Northern Territory, the built environment should be planned compactly to reduce the amount of surfaces exposed to solar radiation. In warm humid regions such as in Queensland, buildings should be openly spaced to maximize air movement between individual buildings. This would reduce the structure operational energy consumption and maximise Green Star rating. Green building is a tremendous growth area in design, construction and building materials. Green building has gained momentum due to the rise in energy costs and cost of building materials. The happy medium is somewhere between a combination of passive measures through optimal building design and active measures achieved through efficient mechanical system designed to control the indoor climate. These active measures mentioned above include utilizing renewable energy, such as solar energy, wind energy and geothermic energy, improving thermal performance of building structure, utilising daylight and energy efficient lightings, and developing new sustainable building materials (Thormark, 2005). Another aspect of sustainability that is often neglected is social sustainability. Social sustainability can be thought of as qualitative indicators that complement the development process. Some social sustainability objectives are to provide adequate local services and facilities to serve the development, to provide housing to meet the needs of the population, to provide high quality, habitable developments and where possible to preserve local culture and heritage. In any actual development, there is a need for other supporting elements to make it appealing and sustainable. An integral part of the development is to provide high quality energy efficient buildings for community activities such as musicals and outdoor space for open markets. By having such gatherings, the community will get a sense of ownership and will utilise the facility frequently. A salient aspect of sustainable development is to provide a mix of housing structures of all different types (Zhu & Lin, 2003). In order to achieve the objective of providing affordable housing; designs and construction must be of high quality and yet utilises minimal resources. Wherever possible, cultural heritage should be preserved through the reutilising of local valued buildings. If cultural preservation is achieved, the architectural design for the developments will reflect local heritage and use local materials. According to Williams and Dair (2007), there are 9 commonly identifiable barriers to achieving sustainability. Some of these barriers are: 1. Sustainability measure was not considered by stakeholders 2. Sustainability measure was not required by client (includes purchasers, tenants and end users) 3. The sustainability measure cost too much (in some cases the investor would not fund) Unless sustainability is on the agenda of the local planning government, stakeholders are unlikely to voluntarily put sustainability measures on their agenda. Stakeholders were simply bypassing sustainability issues altogether. As with most local government planning policies, there are strict guidelines regarding social objectives, such as meeting housing needs. If a policy is active at the forefront of development then they appeared on stakeholders’ agendas. Many architects have the ability to succeed in achieving a higher star rating for energy efficiency for their built environment projects. They have been doing so for a while. The challenges of sustainability in the future should not be construed as extra attachments to how architects have designed in the past. Architects have the inherent ability to go back to the drawing board and to reinvent the design process to reflect the buildings needed for the future. Architects have a vital role to play. They are a part of key decision making mechanism in the building and construction industry. Going forward, their role will be inextricably linked to producing sustainable outcomes. There are many indicators for sustainable building design (Smith 2001). (a)Identifying possible sources to generate renewable electricity on location, i. e. like Building-Integrating Photovoltaic (BIPV). (b)Minimal usage of fossil fuel energy sources used during the lifetime of the building. (c)Ensuring that building management systems are user friendly simple to operate. (d)Implementing passive or active solar energy while employing heating and cooling systems which are fine tuned to the needs of the occupants with air-conditioning used only in exceptional circumstances. As we progress into the future, the need to provide shelter increases due to population growth. The building structures needed for this growing demand have to be environmentally and socially sustainable. There is a global increase in awareness of the diminishing supply of traditional fossil fuel resources. Fossil fuels make up the core heating and cooling energy consumption presently. In order to achieve sustainability and leave the next generation able to meet their needs, there are short term increased economic costs as the transition from traditional dependent on fossil fuels to alternative energy sources. These barriers have to be overcome and the role of the architect in the overall schema is extremely important.
